A visitor visa is required for certain foreign nationals who wish to visit or transit through Canada.
Visitor Visa Requirements
Depending on your nationality, you may need to obtain a temporary resident visa. Visitors from countries that do not require a visa (except the U.S.) must apply for an eTA before boarding.
Eligibility Criteria:
- A valid passport or travel document
- Good health (a medical exam may be necessary)
- Proof of ties to your home country (job, property, family) to demonstrate intent to return
- Sufficient funds for your stay (amount varies depending on trip details)
- A letter of invitation from a Canadian resident (if applicable)
Visa Issuance & Process
Approved applicants receive a visa, either single or multiple entries, to use for travel. The process involves completing an online application, submitting supporting documents, and paying fees. Processing times vary based on your country and individual circumstances.

Extending Your Stay & Refusals
If you wish to stay longer, you must apply for an extension at least 30 days before your current visa expires. A visitor record will allow you to remain legally in the country with a new expiry date. If your application is pending, your status remains valid (maintained status).
A refusal can be disappointing, but it's not the end. Understanding the reasons and working with an immigration expert can increase your chances of success upon reapplication.
eTA Requirements
An eTA is mandatory for visa-exempt travelers arriving by air. It is electronically linked to your passport and valid for up to five years or until your passport expires. While it facilitates entry, it does not guarantee admission—border officials decide at the port of entry.
