General Skilled Migration Visas
- Subclass 189 (Skilled Independent) - No sponsorship required, points-based
- Subclass 190 (Skilled Nominated) - State/territory nomination required
- Subclass 491 (Skilled Work Regional) - Provisional visa, pathway to PR
- All require occupation on Skilled Occupation List
Points Test Requirements
Minimum 65 points required. Points awarded for:
- Age (max 30 points for ages 25-32)
- English language (max 20 points for Superior)
- Skilled employment (max 20 points for 8+ years)
- Educational qualifications (max 20 points for PhD)
- Australian study (5-15 points)
- State nomination (5 or 15 points)
- Partner skills (10 points)
Skills Assessment & EOI
Before applying:
- Skills assessment from relevant assessing authority
- Competent English (IELTS 6.0 each band minimum)
- Submit Expression of Interest (EOI) via SkillSelect
- Receive invitation to apply based on points ranking
- Health and character checks required
Visa Fees & Costs
Application costs (2024 estimates):
- Primary applicant: AUD $4,640
- Additional applicant 18+: AUD $2,320 eachAdditional applicant under 18: AUD $1,160 each
- Skills assessment fees: AUD $500-1,000
- Health checks: AUD $300-500 per person
Permanent Resident Benefits
As an Australian PR:
- Live and work in Australia indefinitely
- Enroll in Medicare (public healthcare)
- Sponsor eligible relatives for PR
- Travel to and from Australia for 5 years
- Apply for citizenship after 4 years (including 1 year as PR)
